FLEXnCONFU

CONCEPT

Pillar 1

Use of non-conventional fuels in gas turbines combined cycle power plants for flexibility needs and higher environmental sustainability.

Gas turbine based generation systems offer efficient energy conversion solutions to meet the challenge of fuel diversity while maintaining superior environmental performance. FLEXnCONFU evaluates the hydrogen and ammonia combustion performances by conducting a test campaign at Cardiff University combustion laboratory considering different ammonia/methane/hydrogen blends. Tests outcomes will allow a deeper understanding of the modifications required on the gas turbines for ammonia and hydrogen combustion.

Pillar 2

Integration and demonstration of Power to X systems in real power plant.

Combined energy and storage technologies, such as Power to X, represent promising solutions for current multi-dimensional balancing challenge (temporal and spatial grid balancing). FLEXnCONFU will explore the path of carbon-neutral feature producing cleaner gases that can be used as a fuel.

Pillar 3

Development of proper grid oriented control strategies.

To efficiently align power plants’ flexibility with grid balancing need in the electrical market framework, FLEXnCONFU promotes an innovative grid oriented controller, driven by the electrical market conditions, aiming to match the requests of the grid with properly managed Power to X systems producing hydrogen and ammonia.

Pillar 4

Promotion of a hydrogen and ammonia energy society.

In line with the Clean energy for all Europeans package, FLEXnCONFU contributes to the establishment of a green hydrogen economy.
